New images 1: Tasmania and New Zealand
Over the summer of 2025-2026, I walked in both Tasmania and New Zealand. In December it was a week-long Wilderness Society 'bioblitz' walk into the poorly protected Southwest Conservation Area to record its values. Then I made a shorter sortie to Mt Gould in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Both walks were spectacular, in different ways. Then in March I enjoyed journeys in the mountains of New Zealand's Kahurangi National Park, a new area for me - but with echoes of Fiordland. I first went to the Mt Owen massif in the Marino Mountains for four days, and then spent 10 days traversing the Herbert and Scarlett ranges with my frequent wilderness colleague Grant Dixon. The Kahurangi weather was exceptionally good, but with consequent water shortages up high.
